Thank
you so much for researching our organization! Many parents are curious
the first time they hear the word 'fraternity' come from their son's
mouth. Please read through our F.A.Q. below. Hopefully it will help you
wrap your brain around the idea of your son becoming a member of our
house- or any other fraternity for that matter. If you have any
questions that are not answered here, please feel free to get in touch
with us through our Contact Page.
Why should my son become a Brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon?
We
could tell you about the thousands of Dollars that we provide to the
school through our balanced man scholarship fund and the Ralph S. Young
memorial Scholarship. Or how we are the most dominant student
organization on campus involved in everything from student assembly
(Matt Cassella, Student body President 2006-07) to the Wilderness
Adventure Club (Lyle Coutts, Active President) to the Senatus Yearbook
(Joel Turley, Editor in Chief 2006-07) even Campus Activities Board
(Adam Brenner, Active President). We could tell you about our campus
clean ups, our campaign to educate freshman on the affects of long term
drug and alcohol use or how we supported a fellow student and local
music artist. We could say
just about anything to make our organization look good. However we
would rather focus on what being in a fraternity is truly all about!
Developing young men into young responsible men. After Completing 4
years as a Brother of the West Virginia Delta Chapter of Sigma Phi
Epsilon the end result is to be ready for the “real
world”. To have ran meetings, conducted events, organized
yearly schedules, handled sizable finances and ultimately learned
respect for yourself and your house through hard work and dedication.
The fraternity gives young men the opportunity to develop real world
skills while still in college, as the fraternity is a business just as
much as it is a social hub.
What is RUSH?
RUSH
is a week full of no-obligation, alcohol free events that are designed
to introduce prospective members to the fraternity and vice versa.
Typical activities involve Monday night football, taco night, and a
walkthrough of our highly regarded facilities. The final night consists
of a formal steak and crab dinner, (food provided by our Alumni) at
which we discuss the specifics of joining the fraternity. Bids are
handed out to people who we think will make a good addition to the
house, and then the students have a choice to make.
What are dues?
Dues are monies, which are collected by the fraternity under the
direction of the Vice President of Finance (basically our chapter's
equivalent to a corporation's Chief Financial Officer) to pay for
national dues, insurance and general maintenance costs of an
organization. The money is paid by all members once each semester.
How much are dues?
Nothing,
if your son is able to maintain a 3.2 GPA. That’s right, our
wise alumni have created an investment plan, which allows the alumni
board to reimburse any Brother capable of achieving a 3.2 GPA in a
given semester. So how does this work? Just pay the $260.00 up front,
get a 3.2 GPA and collect your check from the VP of Finance at the end
of the semester for $260.00. Affording the fraternal experience is just
that simple.
Will my son be hazed?
Sigma
Phi Epsilon is Nationally known as THE MOST progressive fraternity in
the country. This is not an "Animal House." We are human beings and do
our very best to act as such. This fraternity seeks to proliferate the
ideals of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. As we see it, harming
our friends is no way to advertise those morals. More explicitly,
Sig-Ep nationals and Davis and Elkins College both expressly forbid
hazing. It is both illegal and immoral.
