| GENE SCHURG | NATIONALY RECOGNIZED ALUMNI |
On
a Sunday in May, 1974 Gene Schurg swore his oath of obligation to the
Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity before the brothers of the West Virginia
Delta Chapter. No one could imagine that oath was only the beginning of
over a 30 year commitment to influencing the lives of SigEps all over
the country.
As an undergraduate member of WV Delta, Gene served in many leadership
roles including, 2 years as Controller (Vice President of Finance) and
Editor for the chapter's newsletter, The Heart Throb. His term as
Editor was recognized in 1977 by the national fraternity with the
Benjamin Hobson Frayser Award as the most outstanding chapter
newsletter. WV Delta was recognized at the same time with the Buchanan
Outstanding Chapter Award as one of the best SigEp Chapters in the
country. The fraternity experience at D&E changed his life
forever.
Brother Schurg left the Davis and Elkins campus 3 years after taking
his oath on a journey that would cause him to be recognized by his
fraternity 25 years later at the 2003 Grand Chapter Conclave as the
133rd recipient of Sigma Phi Epsilon's highest honor, the Order of the
Golden Heart. Previous members of the Order of the Golden Heart
includes the fraternity's founders, Grand Presidents, and other men who
dedicated a life time to building Sigma Phi Epsilon.
His first stop on his journey after leaving D&E was George
Mason University where Gene earned a Masters Degree in Mathematics and
was a charter member of the Virginia Mu Chapter. During the next two
decades he served this new chapter in every office on the Alumni Board
and as Chapter Counselor. In 1985, he mentored this young chapter to
receive the Sigma Phi Epsilon Buchanan Outstanding Chapter Award.
In the mid-80's Brother Schurg assumed the District Governor position
for Virginia and DC working with alumni volunteers and chapters in this
district. A failing DC Alpha Chapter at The George Washington
University was in need of volunteer support and Gene volunteered to
help rebuild a chapter. The chapter was not to be saved but upon
closing Gene made a commitment to the national fraternity and the DC
Alpha alumni that SigEp would return to the GWU campus again. Today
Gene serves this 90+ man chapter as the President of their Alumni and
Volunteer Corporation and guided them to three Buchanan Outstanding
Chapter Awards.
At the national fraternity level Gene's talents are called upon every
two years to serve the Grand Chapter as the Legislative Manager for all
Conclave legislative activities. The Legislative Manager creates the
agenda and guides the committees through the processes that enact
changes to SigEp and elects the National Board of Directors. He has
served in this role for every Conclave since the fraternity's
centennial conclave in 2001. Between conclaves he is a member of the
national fraternity's Member Development Committee which is responsible
for the Balanced Man Program and encouraging chapters to improve the
usage and teaching of the Ritual. This was the committee first started
by his mentor Frank Ruck in the earliest days of the Balanced Man
Program.
Gene would tell undergraduates and men considering joining SigEp
“I learned more in the halls of Sigma Phi Epsilon as an
undergraduate than I learned in any classroom. It wasn't book knowledge
but practical knowledge about dealing with people. In my career as a
technical sales person the skill of listening and talking with my
customers was taught to me by my brothers.”
Gene enjoys a 30 year career in the computer industry since leaving the
halls of WV Delta. His career has taken him all over the world and for
2 years at the White House programming communication computers for the
Reagan adminstration. Today, Brother Schurg is a Consulting Systems
Engineer for Sun Microsystems visiting Civilian Government accounts
solving complex data storage problems.
“My
four years at D&E in SigEp provided me with a solid foundation
for my future. During my time in Elkins I had great mentors like Keith
Hiser, WV Delta Chapter Counselor, and Alumni Board Treasurer, Frank
Ruck. It was mentors like these men who taught me that you must
continue to give back to the community. It is through Sigma Phi Epsilon
I will leave my legacy when I am gone by encouraging my younger
brothers to strive for excellence just as Keith and Frank encouraged
me.”
